For the last several months there has been a tidal wave of resignations, in the United States and around the world. Being termed as the ‘Great Resignation Wave’, the phenomenon is a nightmare come true for both large and small organizations. So, what exactly is driving this exodus from the workplace?

According to experts, the last two years have been quite challenging for people, and this has led to a major shift in the mindset. As the world is slowly opening up, people are leaving their jobs in search of more money, more flexibility, and more happiness. Many are rethinking what work means to them, how they are valued at work, and how they spend their time. It's leading to a dramatic increase in resignations — According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 4 million Americans quit their jobs in July 2021.

Working from home also changed people’s attitude towards their work. Flexibility that people enjoyed while working from home is a big ask as people return to work and, in its absence, they would rather quit and look for a job that offers flexibility in order to enjoy what they discovered for themselves while working from home.

The new mantra where the work is no longer just about paying bills but also living life to the fullest is taking over. The fact that earlier people were ready to commute for a couple of hours every day to their jobs no longer holds true. On the other hand, organizations are struggling to acquire talent. During this trying period, the most important thing for organizations is to retain talent and make any required changes to rewards, flexibility, and compensation.
